Arrested Development #1

Theme: The Subjunctive

English: We need you to come back and run the business.

Spanish: Necesitamos que regreses y dirijas el negocio.

ISSUE: WHY THE SUBJUNCTIVE?

In this example, “necesitamos” (we need) really means “queremos” (we want).

NECESITAMOS que regreses y dirijas el negocio.
= We NEED you to come back and run the company.
= We WANT you to come back and run the company.

And probably the most common subjunctive “prototype” is when there are two subjects in a sentence (WE need YOU to come back) and one WANTS the other to do something.

Like in this example! One subject wants the other to do something.

So use the subjunctive. It’s that simple!

We need you to come back and run the business.
= Necesitamos que regreses y dirijas el negocio.

VOCABULARY

regreses (from regresar) = to return, come back

dirijas (from dirigir) = to direct, lead, run

el negocio = business
